The Bus Test
This is a terrible - but important - subject.
For starters, getting "hit by a bus" doesn't mean a literalistic bus. Anything from illness to death to a vacation to lack of connectivity to the rest of the team. Something that causes a person to not be able to do what they do that is so important to the organization.
This is being written in the middle of a worldwide COVID pandemic and staring at the rubble of far too many businesses that were not ready to be hit by something like this. If there is anything we have learned in 2020 is "expect the unexpected."
The point is, if anyone in your organization - especially someone in the leadership team - gets "hit by a bus", what will happen?
Please build a game plan. Please build resiliency into your business. Think through the areas that are vulnerable and are at risk and imagine what would happen. Then, take some time to create scenarios, options and plans that jump into place.
Now I know that you might be holding on by the skin of your teeth just trying to juggle all the day to day things. We all are. As of this writing, I have three teens, six growing businesses, and help in a few leadership roles in boards, committees, churches and more.
My suggestion is to book some time in your calendar to plan through what you want out of your life (Step 01) and then where your business will go (Step 04) and dig in on some processes for your business (Step 06). There are elements of all the other steps that will help you get a better handle on your budgeted time, resources and team.
What have you done to protect your business resiliency?
